The Power of Heat Pump Mini-splits

Heat Pump Mini-splits can save you money in many ways. They use less energy than typical central forced air systems and are up to 40% more efficient. Since they are ductless, the cooled or heated air does not lose temperature efficiency traveling through long and/or broken lines of ducting.  Since they are all electric, they use no fossil fuels.

Saving Money

Heat Pump Mini-splits save you money because they use less energy to cool and heat your home.  The system combines interior and exterior units that efficiently cools and heats your home, keep the temperature comfortable.

The interior units vary by the SEER rating, the size in tonnage and BTU rating.  The interior unit also contains the sensors and brains of the system.   The exterior unit provides the power and keeps the refrigerant moving and exhausts or intakes warm air from outside.  This also has a tonnage rating based on the interior unit or units it is connected to.

The efficient combination of components creates a system that is better at cooling and heating the interior areas of your home than any central air system could ever do and for less money.

Ductless is better and cleaner

Ductless mini-split heating and cooling systems are more efficient and cleaner.    Central air system push cooled or heated air through a network of ducting and vents throughout your home.  That network is not always very efficient or well-built.  By the time the air gets to the vent and out into the open air of your rooms, the temperature will vary sometimes greatly from what it was as the source.  You don’t have to worry about that being the case with mini-split systems.

Cleaner is always better

Have you seen the inside of your ducts?  Unless you are cleaning them regularly you may be looking at a picture like this.  Okay…maybe not just like this, but it could get that bad if you don’t manage it.

Dust and fungus can build-up.  Yuck!!!

Yes, you still need to keep the filters on you mini-split clean as well but that is pretty easy.   Bottom line, the air quality in your rooms will be so much better.

No fossil fuels

Heat pump mini-splits are powered by electricity and will be using less of it since they are more energy efficient.  When you are powering your home with solar, you are already producing clean renewable energy.  Your mini-split system will now be cooling and heating your home WITHOUT USING FOSSIL FUELS.  It is a TRIPLE WIN!  It’s clean, efficient and sustainable!

The video below illustrates how a heat pump mini-split system works.   Take a look and leave a comment with your thoughts about it.

Personal Case Study

The average person spends time in one particular room in their home more often than the rest.  Usually that place is the bedroom.  Think for a moment how much time that is–6 to 9 hours a day for most people.  With that said, we cool or heat the rest of our home to make that one room comfortable for that period of time.  THAT is a lot of wasted energy!

I made a change in my own home recently that showed me how effective these systems could be at reducing energy costs.     Here is what we did.

Added 1 mini-split to the bedroom

My wife and I added a Mitsubishi GL 3/4 ton mini-split to that room.   We run it non-stop to maintain the temperature in the room at a comfortable 74 degrees.  When we are ready to retire to the bedroom, we turn up the thermostat for the rest of house or turn it off completely.  Guess what that did?  You guessed it! It lowered our energy consumption.  We were not using as much energy to cool the rest of the house just for our one room.

Below is a set of images that compare our consumption for cooling our house from June and July of 2020 with the same months in 2021.  Even with slightly fewer hot days in 2021 than in 2020, the difference was still dramatic.
