What’s changing on your El Paso Electric bill
El Paso Electric recently implemented major rate changes for residential customers, including a new billing structure for many solar homes. The first thing we want you to know is this:
While electric rates increased dramatically for non-solar homes, per-kWh electric rates actually went DOWN for solar customers.
The good news is that reducing demand is usually fairly simple. Here are some easy ways to lower demand charges:
If you have an electric vehicle, lower the charging amperage.
Most EVs charge overnight anyway, so taking 4 hours to charge instead of 1 hour usually makes little difference in daily life — but it can dramatically reduce demand charges.
Schedule EV charging for late at night. You can still plug your vehicle in when you get home, but schedule charging to begin at 1:00 or 2:00 AM instead of during the evening when air conditioners and household appliances are already running.
Pre-cool your home during the day.
Your solar system produces the most electricity while the sun is shining. Running your refrigerated air conditioning more during daylight hours can help reduce how hard your AC works after sunset, when your home is drawing more power from the grid.
